Godly Play (PK-2 grade)
This Montessori-based method is the heart of our children’s ministry. It is one we chose because it uniquely honors each children’s spiritual journey. Its intent is not so much to tell about God as it is to invite children to experience God’s presence as gracious and real.
How does Godly Play Work?
We have one classroom (preschool through second grade), and treat each worship center as a sacred space. A Doorkeeper waits at the door to greet each child and help him or her become ready to enter the room quietly. A Storyteller then relates a Bible story or liturgical lesson, using elegant materials and purposeful language. The children have the opportunity to enter the story, wonder about it, and then respond to it through artwork or by using the story materials in ways that connect the ideas to their own lives. The session concludes with a small snack or feast served by two of the children with the help of the Doorkeeper, and then a blessing given by the Storyteller. In format a Godly Play session reflects a worship service: getting ready (Opening Acclamation), listening and responding (the Word of God), a feast (Holy Communion), and thanksgiving (Blessing and Dismissal).
